In the thirteenth century, Count Floris gave the assignment to build on the banks of the Zuiderzee a fortress. With Castle Radboud he held the inhabitants of Medemblik under the thumb, so he could defend the area against the thread of the”Friezen”, located on the other side of the Zuiderzee.
